In 2024, Pitt School of Medicine hosted visiting professor and physician Dr. Viktoriia Tkachenko from Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine in Kyiv, as part of the BridgeUSA Ukrainian Academic Fellows Program.

Tkachenko’s research during her time at Pitt centered on mental health in primary care medicine – something that’s become more critical in recent years – and incorporating more interdisciplinary practice into mental health care in Ukraine.

Dr. Tkachenko then developed a curriculum for Ukrainian primary care doctors to continue their medical education and implemented this curriculum in a series of courses throughout 2025.

Tkachenko’s next steps will be to condense this curriculum into a one-week course with plans for it to be a regular CME course offered by Shupyk National Healthcare University.
