Creating Bridges to Experience Culture
A Message from Chloe Santa Maria
This journey through the voices and spirit of Gorongosa would not have been possible without the generous guidance, support and deep community knowledge of Alfredo. Alfredo was more than just a translator—he was our bridge to the heart of Gorongosa. With warmth, patience and unwavering dedication, he introduced us to each cultural and faith group with care and insight, translating not just words, but also meaning, emotion and context. He knew every family, every elder, every group, and thanks to him, we didn’t just observe—we were welcomed.
We also extend our sincere gratitude to Joaquim Ngomane, whose leadership in community health and deep understanding of the people and traditions of Gorongosa were invaluable. His commitment to the well-being of this region—both physical and cultural—added an essential layer of insight to our experience.
A special thank-you as well to Simião Mahumana, director of programs at Gorongosa National Park, whose support helped shape and organize this project. In an incredible twist of fate, Simião once trained as a singer at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts—a performing arts college in my own hometown of Perth. His belief in the importance of these cultural voices, and his commitment to ensuring they are heard, deeply enriched this work and reinforced its purpose.
To Alfredo, Joaquim, Simião and the many others who opened doors, shared songs and offered stories: Thank you. This website is a reflection of your generosity, and it is our honor to share your voices with the world.
